Accident Update

ABC 7 reports that the woman struck by a stolen car on Manhattan Avenue today has died, and that the suspect is in custody with a broken toe.

A woman struck by a minivan allegedly stolen moments earlier has died.

Police say the Dodge Caravan was taken from 275 Jackson Street in Williamsburg early Monday afternoon.

The driver was heading north on Manhattan Avenue short after 2:00 p.m. According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck Violetta Krzyzak at India Street.

Krzyzak, 37, was crossing the street at the time.

The driver kept going, but crashed into a parked car a few blocks away at Manhattan Avenue and Du Pont Street.

Police caught him as he tried to escape on foot.

The 28-year-old suspect, Jose Maldonado, has a number of prior arrests involving stolen cars, police said. He has previously been charged with auto stripping, unauthorized use of a vehicle and a couple grand larceny charges.

Krzyzak of 180 Huron Street in Greenpoint was taken to the hospital where she died.

Maldonado was taken to the hospital with a broken toe. Charges against him are pending.
