WG NEWS+ARTS / THE BROOKLYN RAIL PRE-PRIMARY FORUM — The day after Labor Day, the joint Pre-primary Forum hosted by WG News + Arts and The Brooklyn Rail, didn’t bring out the community in droves, but the local press showed, and the event turned into a successful press conference. It was videotaped and we will do our best to post it on our site. Moderated by The Brooklyn Rail editor Ted Hamm, Council Member Tony Avella running for mayor on the Democratic ticket, spoke and responded to questions regarding his vision for the city if he were elected. Some of his positions include restoring the city’s agenda to being not real estate driven; he also proposed doing away with the Rent Guidelines Board, among other things.
Last night’s event, also featured the first, and probably only debate held in the community between District Council 34 candidates, incumbent Diana Reyna and Gerry Esposito. The third candidate Maritza Davila did not respond to our invitation. (Reyna accepted the invitation the afternoon of the day of the forum.) The two candidates responded to questions about the use of Council discretionary funds, funding for local NYC public schools, questionable allegiances with the Mayor Bloomberg.
