Insound Pop-Up Ends, But Still Online

Street style and Insound 010

Greenpoint-based ecommerce site Insound is known primarily for its encyclopedic trove of indie rock—and in physical forms both new and old. While the store has hundreds of mp3s, according to Matt Wishnow, Insound founder and president, 60 percent of the store’s sales are vinyl records.

“Hobos” Revel with “Railroad Earth”

orangetodd

Railroad Earth played Dec 10 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, and enthusiasm by loyal fans for the band was high; seemed like everybody was swaying, many singing along. The sound of the six virtuoso musicians was constant and full, almost symphonic at times.

A roots and Americana-based jam band from Stillwater, New Jersey, their name derives from the Jack Kerouac 1957 short story “October in the Railroad Earth.”   More > >

If ceaseless online banner ads and sleigh bell-tinged television jingles haven’t made you aware already, we are indeed coming up on the last shopping weekend before Christmas. Shopping locally, you’ll find dozens of unique shops and boutiques from as far up as the North Pole (or in our case, the northern tip of Greenpoint). Many offering complimentary libations, merriment and of course, sources of Christmastide cheap chic.  More > >

Dalaga: Forefront of Franklin St Fashion

Dalaga 003

Greenpoint boutique Dalaga, whose name means “quintessential woman in her prime” in Tagalog, is a pioneer of sorts, that is, if you considered the Franklin St of a few years ago a frontier.

When fashion designer Michelle Mangiliman opened the store in July ’06, some two years after she and her husband uprooted themselves from San Francisco for Greenpoint (the choice of neighborhood largely upon the urging of friends). Back then, “there was one bar and one coffee shop on Franklin St,” Mangiliman said in an email interview. “We loved the people, history, and character of the buildings immediately.”  More > >
