The BOOKlyn SHUTTLE, a project of St. Nicks Alliance, is a Pratt-designed library and education center on wheels. The book bus will have a library, and will also provide storytelling, reading, and arts & crafts events.

For those of you who may not know what’s involved, kids will sit for 540 minutes (90 minutes a day, for 6 days) taking tests in English and Math. This is more test-taking time than is required to finish the SATs and the LSATs combined.
“The key thing is that you need to go in not saying you want to do this ‘for’ the community, but saying that you want to do this ‘with’ the community,” said Vanessa Leung, the secretary of the Citywide Council on English Language Learners.
Every initiative the new parents tried to implement, from writing grants for more arts in the classrooms, to ending the sale of ice cream during school hours, to soundproofing the cafeteria, to renovating the library, was seen as a hostile takeover rather than bettering the learning conditions for all the children in the school.
